Though easily accessible from Aberdeen, and central for exploring Aberdeenshire and North East Scotland, Warthill is completely secluded in the midst of 250 acres of parkland pastures and mature woodland as though it were a world on its own.

A tourist brochure might say 'Bed and breakfast in a Scottish castle', but it's more subtle than that: this is an ancient turreted house with 12 foot thick fortifications dating from the medieval period, Georgian and Victorian additions, and owned by the same family, the Leslies, for hundreds of years. And today it is Candida and Sebastian Leslie who welcome you to stay for bed and breakfast, with the option of dinner as well.

There are lovely walks on the estate, among ancient trees and shrubs, a sedgy loch with wild duck and flowery meadows. Nearby, Aberdeenshire's famous castles, ancient stone circles and golf courses are within easy driving distance.

Hundreds of years have left a patina of age on Warthill - faded carpets, the occasional mark and worn patch - the pictures, furniture and light conjure a tangible air of the passing of time.

A story from the 1745 Rebellion

Warthill Leslies sided with Bonnie Prince Charlie during the 1745 rebellion. The Laird was away with the Jacobite army when the Government troops passing nearby sent a detachment to burn Warthill to the ground. The Laird's chamberlain managed to bribe the soldiers to report back that they had done just that, but leave the house untouched. Then he organised straw bales to be piled in front of the house and set on fire. Later when the Government officers saw the plumes of smoke rising above the trees in the distance they was satisfied that the report of the soldiers was indeed true.

Orange and grapefruit juice.
Cereals, porridge.
Bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, sausages.
Croissants, toast, homemade marmalade.

Wine

A complimentary bottle of House Wine is included, and you are welcome to bring your own wine if you like.

Within a few miles there are also other good places to eat, and a genuine Aberdeenshire pub about a mile away.

Tariff:

£40 per person per night, and including breakfast.

Optional dinner is £25 per person including complementary wine.

Pets by arrangement, and no smoking please.
