Craigdhu Farmhouse

Set back from a small road which goes to the end of the Craignish peninsular Craigdhu is a traditional farmhouse built around a courtyard, and takes its name from the impressive black basalt rock immediately behind the house (craig: crag - dhu: black). It is surrounded by lawns with almost an acre of garden to explore and only yards from the sea-loch Loch Craignish. Craigdhu is ideal for a holiday at any time of the year.

Once the main farmhouse of the surrounding Barbreck Estate Craigdhu has now been renovated to provide self-catering rental accommodation for up to nine (five bedrooms and three bathrooms).

The village shop is less than a mile down the road and there are many good restaurants within an easy drive.

There is no shortage of things to do nearby. Argyll has some of the best gardens in Scotland with the famous Arduaine Garden only three miles up the road. Kilmartin Glen, just over the hill to the south, is the richest area on mainland Scotland for prehistoric sites, with chambered cairns, stone circles, standing stones and great slabs of rock with enigmatic prehistoric carvings. There is also a wide choice of boat trips, some excellent golf courses, good trout fishing, horse riding and interesting walks.

With four double or twin bedrooms and a single bedroom, Craigdhu sleeps nine.

The two double bedrooms have bathrooms en suite, and there is a further bathroom with a large bath and power-shower.

The Sitting Room has an open wood fire, interesting antique furniture and paintings, TV-DVD. Large selection of books. An external door gives direct access to the garden.
Sliding french doors give access to the garden from the Dining Room - an informal extension of the kitchen as you can see in the photograph below.

The fully equipped Kitchen has hand-made ash units, an Everhot cooker (- electric equivalent to an Aga stove) plus an additional electric hob, dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave and large walk in larder. CD player - radio.

Also downstairs is an Entrance Hall, Cloakroom and Utility Room which has a washing machine, tumble dryer, sink, iron and ironing board.

The loft along one side of the courtyard has been converted into a games room with a table tennis table and other games.
There is under-cover parking for a car in the former cart shed garage.

The mature garden has something of interest throughout the year from witch hazel and heathers in January to the last of the fuchsias in December. The large myrtle, camellias, tree heaths and early flowering rhododendrons give the courtyard special character. In front of the house, protected by an escallonia hedge, are many delicate and unusual plants from the Mediterranean and New Zealand. The shrubbery (azaleas, hydrangeas and viburnum) has great views over the loch. Garden furniture and a portable BBQ.
