River Massan Cottages
Benmore
by Dunoon
Argyll
Scotland
These two Victorian estate cottages built in 1890 of local stone are on a tiny no-through road going up Glen Massan where the river tumbles and turns along the south side of one of Scotland's most beautiful gardens, the Younger Botanic Garden.
The cottages are owned by Alice Stobart and Bob Younger, and each sleeps 6. There's a door between the two which can be opened to make one large holiday home for a party of up to 12. The photographs were taken inside Alice's cottage on the left in the picture (above); the cottage on the right is similar in layout.
The view to the front is across the garden, fields and to hills beyond (right). Behind the house is a woodland garden and lawn which is bounded by the River Massan. This whole area is part of the Argyll Forest Park, perfect for walking and exploring thousands of acres of forests, glens, rivers and hills.
Younger Botanical Gardens also known as Benmore Botanic Gardens:
H.G. Younger donated the garden to the nation in 1929 when it was chosen as a specialist outpost of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Its mild climate and high rainfall was found to be especially suited to the cultivation of the plants gathered on the botanical expeditions of George Forrest in western China between 1904 and 1932. In 125 acres of hillside walks you can find Redwoods (sequoiadendron) planted in 1863 and now over 130 feet tall, one of the finest collection of species Rhododendrons, rare and endangered native Scottish plants, a Bhutanese Glade, Tasmanian Ridge, and Chilean Rainforest Glade. Open 1 March - 31 October.
