Achleek Cottage, on the Laudale estate south of Loch Sunart, stands with a commanding view down the loch and across to the mountains of Moidart and Sunart on the other side. (The very names of Sunart, Moidart and Loch Shiel evoke heather and the isles.) This was once a tackman's house. ( The representatives or estate managers for the Highland clan chiefs were known as tackmen and the Highland Clearances saw the inevitable decline of their role). The cottage has newly been renovated to a high standard and is both cosy and comfortable.
As the centre of Jacobite support for Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, this area recalls an era of history and romance. Largely uninhabited and with few roads, this is a paradise for walkers. The tranquil village of Strontian lies 3 miles away with its hotels, shops and restaurants clustered around a green. In 1722, the first traces of the element strontium were discovered in the lead mines, long since abandoned, and gave the village its name. From Strontian you have access right down to the end of the Ardnamurchan peninsula where you'll arrive at the lighthouse marking the most westerly point of mainland Britian with the beautiful beach at Sanna nearby (36m) and the possibility of boat trips from Kilchoan.
If you miss the hubbub of modern life you can take the Corran Ferry and drive 23 miles to Fort William which has all facilities, golf, leisure centre and a supermarket.
23 miles in the opposite direction takes you to Glencoe with its sad history of betrayal and loss although today it is better known to climbers and walkers. For golfers there is the beautiful course above the famous silver sands at Arisaig, 40 miles to the north west.
South west of the cottage, down Gleann Geal, lies Lochaline (17m) where you can cross to Fishnish on Mull using the little car ferry and thence to Iona.
There is the possibility of fishing and deer stalking in the area.
