The quiet road from Strachur to Otter Ferry and Tighnabruaich follows the eastern shore of Loch Fyne then rises high above the loch in a picturesque route which affords wonderful views across to the opposite shore where Minard and Carrick are situated with the Knapdale hills beyond.

And this is the view that greets you at Drimdarroch, a most comfortable, modern, detached, whitewashed farm cottage which stands well off the road on a farm track. Sunny, spacious, and double-glazed, Drimdarroch has been painstakingly furnished and equipped by its owners, with a bright kitchen diner, an excellent sitting room with large picture windows and multi-fuel stove, three good bedrooms and bathroom. There is ample parking to the side, a large decked area to the front and a grass garden with seating area to the back, through which a stream runs, so care may be required with young children. (Children will doubtless adore the two ponies who are usually grazing in the field in front of the cottage.)

In Strachur (5m) you will find a shop/café, petrol station and the well-known Creggans Inn. Dunoon (22m) offers more serious shopping as well as the chance to take the ferry over to Gourock which is not far from Glasgow. There are several other ferry possibilities for Drimdarroch guests – the ferry from Portavadie crosses to Tarbert at the north end of the Mull of Kintyre and in summer you can sail from here to Arran. At Colintraive (19m) the ferry heads for Rothesay, a resort on the island of Bute.

Tighnabruaich (23m) is a popular yachting centre and there is a golf course here as well as in Inverary (24m) and Dunoon. On the Strachur road just outside Dunoon the Benmore Botanic Gardens are well worth a visit as are the Ardkinglas Woodland Gardens at the head of Loch Fyne if you are driving towards Inverary (castle, jail, museum). The Loch Fyne Oyster Bar is excellent for meals or for stocking up with their delicious products. Drimdarroch is also within 6 miles of the boundaries of the Argyll Forest Park, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

The Cowal peninsula is well known for the beauty of its superb landscape. In addition, it is the natural habitat of many wild creatures on land, sea and air. The red squirrel still flourishes here and the magnificent golden eagle, the national bird of Scotland, roams the skies. Loch Fyne is home to considerable numbers of the hard-to-find Eurasian otter as well as to colonies of grey and common seals. You can even spot basking sharks, bottlenose dolphins and the occasional minke whale off this coastline.

There are, of course, plenty of opportunities for walking here, either beside the loch or over the neighbouring hills. Local licences can be acquired for fishing in Loch Eck, Loch Fyne and the rivers Cur and Ruel. Drimdarroch is the perfect place for unwinding and will remain in your memory whether you choose to relax or to be active.

Oil central heating, the first £10 of electricity and bed linen are included and towels may be hired. One well behaved pet is welcome by arrangement (£50 refundable householder's deposit payable on arrival). Sorry, no smoking within the cottage. For £10, payable on arrival, tenants have the opportunity to purchase a weekly family pass allowing free access to the Nevis Leisure Centre in Fort William.
