Kendram Cottage
Kilmaluag
Island of Skye
Sleeping 5
Kendram Cottage is whitewashed in the typical style of the Highland croft house and is situated in a peaceful location on the Trotternish peninsula on the northern tip of the legendary Isle of Skye, with fabulous views over the Minch to the distant Outer Hebrides. Highland cattle, often seen grazing in the neighbouring field, add a touch of picture postcard perfection to the scene. Parking is available at the door.
Inside, the cottage is comfortable and well-appointed. The traditional wood-lined walls have been retained as well as some exposed natural stonework. There are two welcoming sitting rooms, each with an open fire, a modern dining kitchen, small utility room and a family bathroom. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms (one king-size) and a single.
There are excellent walks to be had directly from the cottage. A thirty minute walk will bring you to the edge of cliffs where you can glimpse Minke whales and basking sharks in season. If tempted by the sea there is very good sea fishing only 10 minutes away.
In this attractive region of Skye you are 24 miles from the 'capital', Portree, where you will find supermarkets, restaurants, pubs etc. 9 miles away is the village of Uig with a shop, hotels and more restaurants. From Uig a ferry crosses to Stornoway on the island of Lewis.
If you travel in the opposite direction round to the most northerly tip of Skye you will pass the ruins of Duntulm Castle. The Duntulm Hotel is situated only a mile from the cottage. Meals are available here but do check opening hours in winter as they can vary somewhat. Part of what is now the Flodigarry Hotel was once the home of Flora MacDonald, famous for her part in helping with the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie after Culloden. The graves of Flora and her husband are close by. For those with an interest in geology the Quiraing is a 'must-see'. These incredible rock formations are to be found behind the village of Staffin (5m). To enjoy breathtaking views return to Uig from Staffin by taking the little single track road which curves upwards between these remarkable rocky peaks.
In Staffin you can shop for groceries and fuel. Of the two cafes, one, the Columba Centre has internet access.
The Old Man of Storr is very close to Staffin and on a good day it makes for a very pleasant walk. In 1994 dinosaur bones were discovered in Staffin and it remains an excellent place to find fossils.
The kitchen has a multi-fuel fire which operates the heating and hot water. Heating is by electricity (coin meter) and open fire. Bed linen, the first £15 of electricity and a starter pack of logs are
included in the rental and towels may be hired. Sorry, no pets and smoking is not permitted within the property.
