The House is a well-loved family home set in the midst of a country estate 5 miles from Melrose in the Scottish Borders. The house has now undergone major refurbishment and is offered as holiday accommodation for those who wish to enjoy the elegant lifestyle of country manor living in beautiful countryside.

The public rooms, all with open fires, include a spacious and comfortable drawing room, a stately hall complete with grand piano, a dining room capable of seating 15, and a superb games room with billiard table and table tennis. The large breakfasting kitchen is well equipped and there is also a utility room containing a freezer and washing machine. Curving staircases lead up to the different suites and bedrooms, all of which combine comfort with original character. This is a perfect place to celebrate a family reunion or for groups of friends or families who wish to holiday together.

This impressive 18th century house stands at the end of almost a mile of private driveway. Guests are free to explore the grounds, picnic by the ponds (they may even be tempted to try some simple trout fishing on the river or pond) and admire the view from the bridges. Children will particularly enjoy the space and freedom in which to allow their imagination to run free, although it must be noted that the ponds are not suitable for swimming.

The nearest village is Lilliesleaf (2 pubs, cafe), a ten minute walk from the end of the drive. Melrose is 10 minutes away by car. It is one of the most attractive of the Border towns in its lovely setting between the Tweed and the Eildon Hills. Its ruined abbey, small theatre, host of unusual shops and excellent range of eating places are enough to satisfy most needs. It has a 9-hole golf course on the base of the Eildon, tennis courts in the park, and the Greenyards, its famous rugby ground, home to many a Scots internationalist and birthplace of the sevens game. Teams from all over the world compete each April in the Melrose Sevens.

Edinburgh is only an hour's drive away from Linthill (or leave the car at home and take the regular bus service from Melrose). An hour to the east will take you to the coast with a splendid beach at Coldingham and the RSPB sanctuary on its striking cliff-top perch at St Abbs (where there is also a diving school). This area is justifiably famous for its many stately homes, ruined abbeys, and castles (also sometimes ruined) and all are worthy of a visit.

Heating is by oil-fired central heating (6 hours included) and open fires. Bed linen and towels are included. Up to three well-behaved pets are welcome by arrangement. (There is a double dog kennel.) A refundable householder's deposit will be required. Discounts may be available for smaller parties.
