Scotland

Sleeping 5

It all goes to show that you don't have to go to the back of beyond to get 'away from it all'! Upper Warroch is just a few minutes from the M90 Perth-Edinburgh motorway near Kinross, but you could be in another world, high and alone in the hills.

It is a neat modern bungalow, which sits right at the end of the road on the side of the hill, with grassy fields behind and the sweep of the valley before you. Step out of the door on to the track and head off for miles on foot with only the sheep and skylarks for company. It is a perfect place for children too - with no passing traffic they can play in perfect safety.

Open country round the cottage

The cottage is cosy, simply but comfortably furnished with everything you should need. The sitting room has an open fire, there is a sunny dining kitchen and its three bedrooms, double, twin and single make its accommodation very versatile.

The house is on the Ledlanet Estate, and in addition to its fine walks, guests are welcome by arrangement to fish on its loch. More fishing is available on nearby Loch Leven, where you can also visit the ruined castle on an island from which Mary Queen of Scots made a dramatic escape before fleeing to England. Her turreted palace at Falkland is only 20 minutes drive from the cottage. Historic Stirling, with its castle and Wallace Monument is also worth a visit.

Upper Warroch is the ideal spot to relax and chill out, but if you do crave more energetic activity, you are within easy reach of golf courses (among them Gleneagles, St Andrews, Carnoustie if you really want to push the boat out). The Fife coast has some splendid sandy beaches as well as quaint fishing villages to explore. To the north, there is the Fair City of Perth (concert hall, theatre, all facilities) with Scone Palace just outside. The fast A9 will also take you to Aviemore, the Cairngorms and Inverness itself in just over two hours.

Nature lovers can visit the RSPB reserve at Vane Farm, and speed merchants might also appreciate a day out at the racing circuit at Knockhill. For children, the Blair Drummond Safari park and Deep Sea World are within an hour's drive. At Upper Warroch there really is something for everyone.

Bed linen, towels, heating and electricity are all included!included in the rental. Water is from a private spring. Sorry pets are not accepted and smoking is not permitted in the cottage.
