Whiteburn Cottage,
Near Dunbar,
Berwickshire
Sleeping 4
Situated about 20 miles north of Berwick-on-Tweed and 11 miles south of Dunbar in the fertile farmlands of Scotland's south east corner, Whiteburn Cottage is a traditional, detached, timber-clad stone farm cottage standing in its own enclosed garden (furniture).
Inside, it is comfortable and well-appointed with a bright, spacious sitting room and kitchen with breakfast-bar looking out onto the garden. The cottage is easily accessed from the A1 yet it enjoys a quiet position at the side of a tarmac farm road amid a vast landscape of rolling green fields with panoramic views of the distant Lammermuir Hills. It is also within striking distance of Coldingham's fine sandy beach, the National Trust seabird reserve at St Abbs Head (a must-see for bird-lovers) and the haunting ruin of Fast Castle with its rich historic past.
The nearby farm offers 4x4 and quad bike hire (with tuition) for both adults and children over 6, Abbey St Bathans (2m) has a restaurant, Grantshouse (5m) has a pub and in Duns (9m) there are shops and hotels. An hour's drive away you have all the attractions of the city of Edinburgh. There are several very good golf courses around Dunbar, and Berwick-on-Tweed, for centuries the object of dispute between Scotland and England, is an interesting town to visit. The area boasts several stately homes, the nearest being the elegant Paxton House and Ayton Castle.
Heating is by gas-CH, electricity (
