Facing south just a 100 yards down from St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile (the oldest street in Edinburgh which connects Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood House) is Flat 1 at Number 227. This flat (apartment) is in the very centre of old Edinburgh where people have lived since ancient Celtic times. Though the façade was built in 1795 the core of the building dates from the 1500's. Lorraine and Charles Stewart live in the Borders and have this flat as their family holiday home. They have completely renovated it, preserving its old internal layout but thoroughly modernising it, creating a charming and comfortable flat just one floor above street level. Bedrooms are at the back away from the street, but at the front there are three windows with bench seats from which you can enjoy the life of the Royal Mile. All around there are cafés, pubs and restaurants, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Office is right across the street. During the Festival this part of the street is closed to traffic; pipers play, jugglers and fire eaters dance, and musicians and street actors draw crowds of adults and children. The Stewarts also have four other apartments nearby, 35 Cockburn Street and 6 St Giles Street, 87a West Bow and 112 West Bow. The map at the bottom of the page locates them all. |
