This bright and spacious apartment really is in the very centre of Edinburgh: just a few yards down from St Giles Cathedral on the South side of the the High Street, the middle part of the Royal Mile which runs between Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle. Fascinating all year round, the Royal Mile is further enhanced during the Festival and at Christmas and New Year with a variety of activities and street events , all taking place just beneath the apartment windows. You won't have to walk more than a few paces to plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafés, as well as newspaper, grocery shops and tourist information. And almost everything else in Edinburgh is accessible on foot.

The Royal Mile is lined on either side with tenements each divided into flats with common stairs. Number 166 was built in 1824. The first flight of stairs is straight, but thereafter becomes a wonderful stone spiral with mahogany handrail, and that's how you get to Jane and David Kerridge's flat on the third floor (US: 4th floor). You can see its four windows in the middle of the photograph, above right.

The apartment has central heating, a large sitting room overlooking the Royal Mile with a beautiful Robert Adam fireplace, a kitchen/dining room, bathroom and two bedrooms - warm natural wood floors and architectural details throughout.
