Garden and view

View of the garden and fields beyond, with table and benches under the tree.

This is a perfect example of a stone-built traditional Scottish Georgian farmhouse, in the midst of farmland, near to some of the best golf courses in Scotland and with easy access to Edinburgh.

Comfortably and sympathetically modernised, it is the home of Joanna and Ian McDonald who offer bed and breakfast (2 bedrooms) and a warm and friendly welcome to guests from all over the world.

Joanna is an author with a great interest in the past and surrounding area and is more than happy to offer inspiration and advice on what to look out for as you travel around. Nearby are the historic and atmospheric castles of East Lothian (eg. Dirleton, Lennoxlove and Tantallon) and just across the Lammermuir Hills in the Tweed and Esk river valleys are all the great castles, gardens and ruined abbeys of the Scottish Borders. Close to Crauchie is the ancient ruin of Hailes Castle owned in the 16th century by the Earl of Bothwell, the tempestuous lover (and later husband) of Mary Queen of Scots - just the place for a romantic Scottish picnic with one of Joanna's delicious packed lunches!

If you are keen to play on East Lothian's world-renowned golf courses and links then Ian, who is an enthusiastic golfer himself, is particularly qualified to help you with advice and booking tee times.

Highly recommended also: Concorde and the Scottish Museum of Flight (just a walk across the fields), The Scottish Seabird Centre at North Berwick, boat trips to Bass Rock and island bird sanctuaries, and the cliffs, beaches and wild places of the East Lothian coast. For local knowledge such as "Where is the best and quietest nearby beach to go for a walk" - just ask the McDonalds!
