Stairs and cupola

Rossie House is secluded in parkland and beautiful gardens on the edge of the small village of Forgandenny about 7 miles south west of Perth in central Scotland.

Rossie was originally built by the Oliphants in 1657. Since then it has been much altered and now has an interesting plan, a spectacular central staircase and cupola (right) a tall central arched loggia, and large windows which capture the light and the lawns and gardens which surround the house.

Judy and David Nichol welcome people to stay for bed and breakfast, and have set aside two bedrooms with private bathrooms upstairs for guests. A further bedroom on the ground floor is sometimes available as well.

Rossie House is a very central base for day trips to the east coast golf courses at Carnoustie and St Andrews, Edinburgh, Stirling, Glasgow, the West Coast and the Highlands. But its special attractiveness is its garden - mature woodland with specimen trees, lovely walks, shrubby banks and a water garden - the sort of place in which you will love to wander in the morning after a peaceful night's sleep.

The Garden:

Garden

The garden is open to the public under Scotland's Garden Scheme in May. As a guest you are welcome to walk around at any time.

It is a mature woodland garden with magnificent old trees, rhododendrons and smaller specimen trees. The undulating terrain takes you down paths over bridges by a pond with a sculptured heron by David Annand up and into the walled garden.

The garden is full of interest at any time of the year. From March through May carpets of bluebells, snowdrops and aconites with trillium and meconopsis provide a canvas for the rhododendrons, tree paeonies and the new leaves of young trees. A Davidia Involucra and Cornus Kousa show their bracts in June, an amazing Magnolia Hypolenca intoxicates the air with the scent of vanilla and peach. Stewartia and huge Hydrangeas flower in August, and then Euchryphia, which holds it's flowers through the frost.

Deer, hares and red squirrels frequent the woodland, so the tastier roses and herbaceous plants can be found in the walled garden!
