Kinloch Lodge, situated off the North West Coast of Scotland on the Isle of Skye, is the family home of Lord and Lady Macdonald of Macdonald, who, with expansive hospitality and a profound appreciation of the place itself, have created here a very special and personal hotel, which somehow combines both the ambience of a civilised private house and the peace and seclusion of a wilderness retreat. Kinloch Lodge is the ultimate romantic setting for a wedding.

The delicious meals which guests enjoy when they stay at Kinloch, throughout the seasons and on every occasion, are the perfect expression of world renowned cookery writer Claire Macdonald's love of good food and the Macdonald family's love of entertaining.

Kinloch Lodge, dating back to the early 1600s, was at one time a hunting lodge for nearby Armadale Castle, the ancestral seat of Clan Donald. Recently, an additional house has been built closer to the shore, providing further accommodation (on the left in the photograph above). The new house is called simply Kinloch - to distinguish it from the older Lodge. Altogether the hotel now has 14 bedrooms. The five bedrooms in the new house all have views of the sea, as do many of the rooms in Kinloch Lodge.

Accommodation:

All rooms are very cosy and well appointed with harmonious decoration and lovely fabrics and altogether supremely comfortable.

All bedrooms have private bathrooms.

Family photographs, eighteenth century oil paintings and portraits decorate the main rooms and the views from the windows are South across the sea loch, Loch na Dal, out to the Sound of Sleat, and West towards the Cuillin Hills in the distance.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner:

All the meals are served in the dining room. Before dinner guests are invited to gather in the drawing rooms where drinks are served and where after dinner where there is coffee and fudge..

At Kinloch Lodge there is an excellent wine list and a great emphasis on the use of foods in season, especially locally produced Scottish foods - some of the finest in the world!

Here you will find the best Scottish beef, lamb, game, fish and shellfish, cheeses made from cow's, sheep and goat's milk and home-grown soft fruits. The bread, preserves, muesli, fudge - and everything - are all freshly made at Kinloch Lodge.

All rooms are equally nicely appointed, the only difference is their size and view. There are many seasonal offers and special weekend breaks including Claire Macdonald's Cooking Demonstrations.

Cookery Demonstrations

Claire Macdonald, world famous ambassador for Scottish cookery, develops her much-loved recipes here at Kinloch Lodge. Several of the weekends over the winter months are set aside for Cookery Demonstrations given by her. (Book early if you can - they are very popular).

Sometimes in the summer, for the benefit of hotel guests, there are morning demonstrations which are followed by a light lunch (ask about these too). They are all held in a big kitchen (above right) in Kinloch which is specially designed for the purpose.

Directions:

Direct routes to Skye: A82 south from Inverness. A82 North from Glasgow A9 is the direct route from Edinburgh.
Then take A87 to the Kyle of Lochalsh and the Bridge over to Skye. A less quick alternative is the Armadale Ferry which goes between Mallaig on the mainland and Armadale on Skye.(about 10 miles south of Kinloch Lodge.)
It is also possible to take a train to Mallaig - the last lap of the journey is famously scenic.
EasyJet fly to Inverness and are good value if you book well in advance. Transfer by car to Kinloch can be arranged if you choose this option. www.easyjet.com - it is easy to book on-line.
