Celia and Richard Pickup's family home, Craigadam, is a very convenient and central place to stay for touring in South West Scotland. Just a few minutes from the main Carlisle, Dumfries to Stranraer road (A75) it is a traditional Scottish farmhouse, extended and made superbly comfortable - a quiet country haven and warm welcome for bed and breakfast guests.

Approached by a half mile drive, the house faces across rolling countryside. Behind is 25,000 acres of estate: moorland, woods and lochs and farmland (photograph at the top of the page). The estate is run with conservation and sustainability in mind, and Richard has 1300 ewes and a herd of Highland cattle. He also organises a variety of activities such as birdwatching, deer stalking, shooting and fishing.

Altogether there are a variety of bedrooms, each with its own bathroom or shower-room en suite.

Some are in the main part of the farmhouse, others surround a sheltered courtyard which has a rock garden, pond and fountain.

The bedrooms are very comfortable, furnished with antiques, and decorated imaginatively.

They include a Chinese Suite, Indian Suite, Victorian Suite, Scottish Traditional Suite, Scandinavian Suite, Macintosh Suite and Creole Suite.

The Dining Room. Special diets can be happily catered for with advance notice.

Celia specialises in game cooking (much from the estate itself) and dinners are relaxed and generous, country house style, around a long table in the oak panelled Dining Room.

After dinner you can relax in the comfortable Drawing Room where there is a log fire, or play snooker on the full-size table in the Billiards Room where there is an honesty bar.

Craigadam was a finalist in the 'Macallan Taste of Scotland' awards in 2000 and 2001, and has an RAC Rosette for cuisine.

Breakfast:

A choice of cereals, fruit juice, apricot and ginger compôte, prunes, figs in orange juice and Martini, grapefruit, kiwi, grape and melon compôte with limes and mint, natural and fruit yoghurt, home-made bread and home-made marmalade, full cooked Scottish breakfast (fresh fish with advance notice), freshly ground coffee, tea.

The Estate:

Loch

Walk over the fields about a mile behind the house and you come to a loch (trout fishing available), with magnificent views south over unspoilt countryside to distant hills on the horizon. The estate has an abundance of wildlife: wide diversity of habitat encourages a particularly interesting variety of plants animals and birds.

  • Highland cattle, Sheep.
  • Fishing : two miles of the River Nith, Salmon and Sea-trout.
  • A beat on the River Cairn, Salmon and Sea-trout.
  • The Craigadam trout loch, Rainbow Trout of up to 6 lb.
  • Hill-lochs with wild Brown Trout.
  • Shooting : Driven Shooting, Rough Shooting and Wildfowling.
  • Deer Stalking : rifle or camera.
