Hartleap is set off a small road in a garden made by Lindsay Lewis and her partner Kevin MacLean who warmly welcome guests to stay for bed and breakfast. It's a real retreat, perfect for writers, artists or anyone with romantic sensibilities to come and connect with the landscape and tranquility.

Hartsleap bed and breakfast

The roads through the central part of Southern Scotland, through the valleys of the tributaries of the River Tweed, are some of the quietest and most lovely in all of Scotland. These ancient hills with gentle slopes are inhabited by shy flocks of wild goats and barely visible sheep. The Southern Upland Way is just 3 miles from the house but you can walk anywhere over these hills and the sense of peace is profound. Skylarks still sing high above the grasslands, heather and bracken.

Yet it's also accessible and central for exploring Southern Scotland from East to West coasts. Edinburgh, the great houses, castles and abbeys of the Borders are within an hour's drive, and Hartleap is close to the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre in the West, Kagyu Samye Ling, whose beautifully coloured temple and stupas nestle in a valley less than 25 minutes away.

Lindsay has an arts background and Kevin is a photographer, and they are both happy to advise on visits to galleries and cultural centres. Kevin is also a keen cyclist and this area has some of the best mountain biking in Scotland including the world-class 7 Stanes mountain biking trails and great road cycling.

So stay at Hartleap and relax in the immediate surroundings, or travel about. As you wish. As Lindsay says, "It's as private as your own self-catering holiday, only we do the catering!".
